You can take steps to protect your vaginal health and overall health
- The first and foremost tip on how to keep your vagina clean and healthy is to avoid douching. Douching might interfere with the pH levels of the vagina, decreasing its acidity and setting the environment for bacterial infections. As normal, vagina pH is from 3.8 to 4.5.
- For you underwear, cotton is a good choice. That is why most underwear comes with thin strip of cotton fabric in its crotch. Cotton underwear dries quickly and allows air to flow freely through the fabric and also helps absorb moisture. This prevents the development of damp conditions that promote the growth of yeast and unhealthy bacteria that might lead to an infection
- Be sexually responsible. Use condoms or maintain a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who’s free of sexually transmitted infections. If you use sex toys, clean them after every use.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccinations can protect you from HPV, the virus associated with cervical cancer, as well as hepatitis B — a serious liver infection that can spread through sexual contact.
- Do Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises can help tone your pelvic floor muscles if you have prolapse, leaking of urine or weakness of the pelvic floor.
- Know your medications. Discuss medication use and possible vaginal side effects with your doctor.
- Limit the amount of alcohol you drink, your sugar intake and don’t smoke. Chronic alcohol abuse can impair sexual function. Nicotine might inhibit sexual arousal. Substance abuse might also cause poor physical and mental health, which can affect sexual function. Cut back on sugar, processed carbohydrates, and alcohol. Sugar can make a yeast infection worse, so it is important to limit or avoid excess sugar. Don’t add sugar to your food, and check labels to identify foods that have added sugars. Also, steer clear of processed carbohydrates and alcohol since these are high in sugar.
- Sleep naked, or at least without underwear. Your vagina is a perfect environment for bacteria because it is always humid and warm. Sleeping without any clothes, you will have a normal vagina flora and will have a reduced risk of catching any fungal infections. Let your tender skin down there breathe freely by sleeping naked each night. If naked it’s too much for you, switch to loose-fitting cotton underwear.
- Regular checkups can help ensure that problems affecting your vagina are diagnosed as soon as possible. Don’t let embarrassment prevent you from talking to your doctor about any concerns you might have about your vaginal health.
